Introduction to the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences

The School of Chemistry and Life Sciences is one of the earliest-established secondary Schools of Hubei University of Education. Its predecessor was the Department of Chemistry of Hubei University of Education, founded in August 1984. The school was officially renamed the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences in February 2009.

The school currently has 68 faculty and staff members, including 56 full-time teachers. Among them, 28 hold associate senior professional titles or above, 44 hold doctoral degrees, 6 have postdoctoral research experience, and 2 have been selected as Chutian Scholars of Hubei Province. The school has approximately 1,200 undergraduate students.

The school offers four undergraduate programs: Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Biological Sciences, and Biopharmaceuticals. Among these, the Biological Sciences program was selected for the Strategic Emerging (Pillar) Industry Talent Training Program of Hubei Province in 2015, approved for the “Jingchu Outstanding Talent” Collaborative Education Program in 2018, and recognized as a First-Class Undergraduate Program of Hubei Province in 2019. In 2019, the “Basic Chemistry Teaching and Research Section” was awarded Outstanding Grassroots Teaching Organization of Hubei Province. In 2021, the Chemistry program was approved as a First-Class Undergraduate Program of Hubei Province. In 2025, the Chemistry major was newly included in the “Jingchu Excellent Teacher Program”, with a planned enrollment of 56 students. In 2023, the Analytical Chemistry course was approved as a provincial-level first-class course.

The school currently offers four Provincial First-Class Course (Analytical Chemistry I, Animal physiology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmaceutical Analysis), one Provincial High-Quality Online Open Course (Common Human Diseases), and two University-Level First-Class Courses (Animal Physiology and Molecular Biology Experiments). The school is equipped with 21 professional laboratories for chemistry and biology, covering a total laboratory area of 3,200 square meters, with experimental teaching equipment valued at over RMB 20 million.

The school ranks among the leading units in scientific research at Hubei University of Education and has been repeatedly awarded as an Advanced Scientific Research Unit at the university level. The discipline cluster of Advanced Energy Storage Materials Science and Technology has been approved as an Advantageous and Characteristic Discipline Cluster of Hubei Province. In recent years, the school has been granted 3 provincial-level research teams, 10 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 Ministry of Education research project, 90 provincial-level research projects, 3 “Chenguang Program” projects, and 88 industry-sponsored projects, with total research funding exceeding RMB 30 million. Faculty members have published over 300 academic papers, including more than 100 indexed by SCI and over 100 in core Chinese journals, and have been granted more than 30 authorized patents.

The school places great emphasis on the development of high-level faculty. In recent three years, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been appointed as the Director of the Academic Committee of the Hubei Key Laboratory of Purification and Application of Plant Anti-cancer Active Ingredients, and dozens of renowned professors from leading universities at home and abroad have been invited as visiting professors. The school regularly organizes academic lectures and provides professional guidance, effectively enhancing teaching quality and research capability. Meanwhile, the School actively learns from advanced international educational concepts and continuously strengthens cooperation and exchanges with overseas universities. Since 2015, several faculty members have been sponsored as national visiting scholars to conduct academic visits at Purdue University, the University of California, Berkeley, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Wollongong, Australia.

The school hosts the Hubei Key Laboratory of Purification and Application of Plant Anti-cancer Active Ingredients, which focuses on fundamental research on the mechanisms of plant-derived anti-cancer activity, purification technologies of anti-cancer active compounds, and application research of purified plant-based anti-cancer drugs. The laboratory is equipped with advanced large-scale instruments, including High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, Fluorescence Spectrophotometer, Inverted Microscope, Microcalorimeter, and Gel Imaging Analysis System. In 2021, the discipline cluster of Advanced Energy Storage Materials Science and Technology was approved as a provincial advantageous and characteristic discipline cluster. In addition, the school undertakes the construction and research tasks of theInstitute of Materials Science of Hubei University of Education and the Hubei Engineering Technology Research Center for Environmental Purification Materials.

The school emphasizes the integration of theoretical teaching and practical training, with a strong focus on cultivating students’ innovation awareness and practical innovation abilities. Teaching quality has improved steadily. Over the past five years, students have achieved outstanding results in national and provincial competitions such as the “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, National “Challenge Cup”, National Teaching Skills Competition for Normal University Students, Hubei Provincial Biology Experimental Skills Competition, and Hubei Provincial Chemistry (Chemical Engineering) Achievement Report Conference. More than 160 awards have been received, including over 40 national-level awards and 137 provincial-level awards, and 40 utility model patents. The postgraduate admission rate has consistently remained at around 20%.

Relying on the enterprise resources of the Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone, the School focuses on meeting the development needs of high-tech enterprises in Optics Valley BioCity and actively explores diversified models of university–industry cooperation. In 2014, Hubei University of Education and Wuhan Institute of Biotechnology signed a strategic cooperation agreement to jointly establish the Optics Valley School of Chemistry and Life Sciences. In 2015, the Optics Valley BioCity Internship and Training Base was approved as a Hubei Provincial Internship and Training Base. The school has established 20 off-campus professional internship bases, 6 teacher education internship bases, and 3 field practice bases, and has set up entrepreneurship and employment bases with leading high-tech enterprises such as Jointown Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., WuXi AppTec Co., Ltd., Humanwell Healthcare, and BGI. These initiatives aim to cultivate high-level professionals in chemical synthesis, analytical testing, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences to meet the rapid economic development of Optics Valley BioCity. The school hosts the annual “Talent Gathering in Optics Valley” specialized job fair, with a graduate employment rate reaching 90%.

英国威廉集团简介

英国威廉集团是william威廉英国办学最早的二级学院之一,前身为湖北教育学院化学系,成立于19848月,20092月正式更名为英国威廉集团。

学院现有教职工68人,其中专任教师56人。专任教师中具有副高级以上职称28人,具有博士学位教师44人,博士后工作经历6人,湖北省楚天学子2人。在校学生1200人左右。

学院设有化学、应用化学、生物科学、生物制药共4个本科专业。其中生物科学专业入选2015年湖北省普通高等学校战略性新兴(支柱)产业人才培养计划,2018年获批湖北省普通本科高校“荆楚卓越人才”协同育人计划项目、2019年获批 “湖北省一流本科专业”; 2019年“基础化学教研室”获批湖北省优秀基层教学组;2021年化学专业获批 “湖北省一流本科专业”; 2025年我校“ 荆楚优师计划 ”新增化学专业 ,计划招生562023年《分析化学》获批省一流课程。学院现有《分析化学I》湖北省级一流课程一门,《人体常见病》湖北省首批精品在线开放课程一门,《动物生理学》、《分子生物学实验》二门校级一流课程。拥有化学和生物各类专业实验室21个,实验室建筑面积达3200㎡,实验教学设备价值2000余万元。

学院科研实力在学校名列前茅,科研成果丰硕,多次被评为校级科研先进单位。学院“先进储能材料科学与技术”学科(群)为湖北省优势特色学科群。近年来获批省级科研团队3个 ,获得国家自然科学基金项目10项 、教育部科研项目1项 、省级科研项目90项 ,“ 晨光计划”项目3项 ,横向课题88项,到账经费3000多万元。专任教师发表论文300多篇,其中被SCI收录论文100余篇、核心期刊100余篇,授权专利30余项。学院注重高层次人才队伍建设。     在师资力量建设方面,学院近3年聘请中国科学院院士担任“植物抗癌活性物质提纯与应用湖北省重点实验室”学术委员会主任,聘请数十位国内外知名大学教授担任学院客座教授。学院充分发挥高层次人才的积极作用,定期举办学术讲座并进行专业指导,推动教学质量和科研能力稳步提升。学院还十分注重对国内外先进教育理念的学习,不断加强与国外知名高校的交流与合作,自2015年以来,已有多名教师作为国家公派高级研究学者分别前往美国普渡大学、加州大学伯克利分校、新加坡国立大学及澳大利亚卧龙岗大学进行学术访问。

学院拥有“植物抗癌活性物质提纯与应用湖北省重点实验室”,实验室主要从事植物抗癌作用机理基础研究和植物抗癌活性成分提纯技术及其提纯药物的应用研究,拥有高效液相色谱仪、气相色谱仪、原子吸收光谱仪、荧光分光光度计、倒置显微镜、微量热仪、凝胶成像分析系统等大型仪器设备。2021年学院 “先进储能材料科学与技术”学科(群)获批省级优势特色学科群。同时,学院还承担william威廉英国材料科学研究院和湖北省环境净化材料工程技术研究中心2个学科平台建设和科研工作。  

学院注重理论教学与实践相结合,大力培养学生的创新意识和实践创新能力,教学质量逐年提高。近5年来,在全国“互联网+”大学生创新创业大赛、全国大学生“挑战杯”竞赛、全国师范院校师范生教学技能大赛、湖北省生物实验技能竞赛、湖北省化学(化工)成果报告会等竞赛活动中屡获佳绩,160多人次获奖,其中获国家级竞赛奖项40余项;省级竞赛奖项137项;实用新型专利40项;历届研究生录取率均保持在20%左右。

学院依托武汉东湖新技术开发区企业资源优势,重点围绕光谷生物城高新企业的发展需求,开展多种校企合作模式,积极搭建产学研校企合作平台。2014年,william威廉英国与武汉生物技术研究院签订战略合作协议,共建“光谷英国威廉集团 ”;2015年专业实习基地--光谷生物城实习实训基地获批“湖北省实习实训基地”,建有校外专业实习基地20个、6个师范专业教育实习基地和3个野外实习基地;学院先后在九州通股份有限公司、武汉药明康德新药开发有限公司、人福医药、华大基因等高新企业建立创业、就业基地,积极培养适合光谷生物城经济迅速发展的化学合成、分析检测、生物技术和制药方面的专业人才,每年举办“才聚光谷”光谷生物城专场招聘会,就业率达90%
